Wicca-de-whackIt's said that any discussion of politics or religion is bound to be offensive to someone. Well this ain't about politics, and it's a matter of opinion whether it's about religion, either - but our little rant about Wicca seems to have steamed a few clams .... hdarrow@pcisys.net writes: Hey, pal, don't dis Wicca! Wow! I've never seen "dis" and "Wicca" in the same sentence before. It's sorta like reading "chillin' with the Klan" - quite shocking. While it is true that a lot of personal pantheons are eclectic in the extreme, that doesn't mean you have to call us a bunch of weanies. I believe the word was "pinheads", as "weanie" implies a degree of intelligence that can't be attributed to folkslike ... well .... you. And for a slightly more verbose, but somewhat less amusing response ... Christian Pena writes: If you do not know about something then do not comment about it ... to call [Wicca] nothing more than a "new-age religion" is IGNORANT since you do not understand what you are saying. There are no shortage of Web pages about Wicca out there, and we've looked into a few of them - partly out of curiosity, but mostly because somebody e-mailed us a message that said something like "check out the dork on this Web page." And so, Wiccans in general have had a number of opportunities to enligten us, make us more sensitive to their values and beleifs. Instead, all we get is "Fantasy" art (some cheerleader in a brass wonderbra crouching over a neon orange panther or some such nonsense) and a lot of bad - really bad - poetry. Granted, there are a few serious Wiccabees out there, but the vast majority are poseurs in felt costumes, for whom Wicca is merely an item in a list of pubescent affectations. And it really doesn't help your sad attempt to be taken seriously when your fascination with "Wicca" generally apears in the same list as "Dungeons and Dragons" or "Magic the Gathering." And so, it's true we're still unelightened about Wicca, and totally ignorant of any reason, whatsoever, that anyone would take you seriously. Wicca IS a religion, and one that has been around for centuries more than Christianity, Catholtism, since before Moses and even the Buddah That's sounds so desperate - like the made-up age of a made-up belief gives it any semblence of veracity. People beleived the world was flat, laid out like a pancake on top of a giant turtle, for many millenia before they figured out how foolish that concept was and decided to get a life. Of course, that probably falls on deaf ears: Wiccabees and Flat-Earthers are birds of a feather, except the art on "Flat Earth" Web sites tends to be a lot less imaginative, there's no poetry, and they generally don't wear silly costumes. Anyway, what do comparisons matter? You can point out the Jesus freaks who speak in tongues and roll all over the floor, or whirling dervishes who coat themselves in cow feces and bark at the moon. Maybe you could convince us your religion is less stupid. But in the end, stupidity is a cardinal quality - and you'll never convince anyone to buy rotten-egg perfume because it smells less bad than the stuff that's made out of deer piss. I dont write things bringing down your faith so please dont write things bringing down mines. It's doubtful you'll keep up your end of the bargain. Our faith (or perhaps you'd call it "ourses") includes the belief that you're a Froot Loop. Can you respect that? But in the interest of equal time, I suppose it's worth mentioning that there are a few - well, maybe just one - who seem to get it ... vulpine@pobox.com writes: I stumbled upon "Three Reasons No One Takes Wicca Seriously." Now, my computer at home is rather slow and I had to wait till the picture loaded. At first, I was annoyed ... You see, I am Wiccan. I take my religion seriously. ... Then, the picture loaded and I laughed my ass off. Some sacred cows need to be killed. We count five - the three in that photo, and the previous two. If you can cast a spell of "impart a clue," would you? Oh, and that's not all from the Wicccabees ... but the next response is so hillarious it merits its own special page. | |||||
