There seem to be conflicting nuptial traditions. By one folkway, a young man has to trade some chickens and a few head of cattle for a bride. By another, the same potential groom stands to gain land and livestock as payment for taking a young woman off her father's hands. Some women you pay to get - others, you get paid to take. Try to guess which way the money goes here. By the smile on her father's face (there's a certain blonde, pink, fat family resemblance), he's either filled his pantry or is just as glad to have emptied it - my guess is groceries don't last too long in this household anyway. That calls to mind another curious tradition: the groom isn't allowed to see the bride before the ceremony. Boy, is he in for a surprise! | |||
